The Irrelevance That Never Was
On Coherence, Perception, and the Cost of Non-Resolvability
Over the past ten months, I have been examining a question so deeply entangled in my life that it was imperceptible to me and corrosive to my relationships. Encouraged by Kim and guided by a number of healers, I entered a series of processes that were, at times, excruciating. What emerged was not a new story, but the recognition of something that had been structuring my experience long before I had the capacity to see it. I found the seat of my anger, my resentment, and the coping mechanisms I had mistaken for character. I also saw that what I had failed to recognize in my closest relationship was not absent, but invisible to me, obscured by a blindness that had been set in motion before I formed any relational intelligence. This reflection is offered with the suspicion that I am not alone in carrying a pattern that is both harmful and widely normalized under the names of parenting, religion, and culture.
There is an observation that first presents as fragmentation. One can point to the child who is corrected but never seen in his alignment, the man who must perform to establish his place, the god who punishes transgression but remains silent in righteousness, the philosopher who removes reward and punishment yet leaves the subject unformed, and the body that tightens in anticipation of being unseen. These appear to belong to different domains. They are usually treated as separate pathologies—developmental, relational, theological, philosophical, somatic. But when they are held without reduction, they reveal not multiplicity but invariance. A single condition is expressing across scales. Coherence is present, yet the field encountering it lacks the dimensional capacity to resolve it as perceptible without mediation.
What is often described as irrelevance in the masculine, frequently criticized as inadequacy and named here as the Y-fracture, does not arise from a lack of substance. It arises from a lack of perceptual capacity. The system of the emerging boy encounters coherence but does not have the axes required to register it as real. From this mislocation emerges a persistent and consequential error. Absence of recognition is interpreted as absence of being. When fully distorted, this becomes what is labeled as “narcissism” by those who never read the myth to see that term’s true tragedy. What is not seen is assumed not to exist. What is not registered is assumed not to be real.
The boy who grows within such a field is corrected, sometimes severely, when he deviates. Yet nothing in his environment renders his alignment or admirable qualities visible. Wrong becomes vivid and charged. Right remains diffuse and silent. The system organizes itself accordingly, not around truth but around perturbation. He learns to navigate by avoiding disruption rather than by recognizing coherence. It is tempting to say that he internalizes shame, that he comes to believe he is wrong. But that conclusion is secondary. The more precise structure is this: the field does not register his coherence, and therefore coherence does not organize his reality. What cannot be registered cannot be known. What cannot be known cannot orient the self.
From this absence of orientation, adaptation arises. It is not pathology in its origin, but intelligence within constraint. Vigilance replaces recognition. The absence of error becomes a proxy for truth. The child becomes highly skilled at not being wrong, while remaining fundamentally unfamiliar with what it feels like to be right. And when fully inhabited, this pathology distorts all expressions of love through the lens of the “transactional” and the functional rather than the generative. This behavior of my own has caused immeasurable damage.
This structure does not dissolve with development. It scales. The masculine enters a cultural field that reproduces the same asymmetry. His presence is not directly resolvable. It must be mediated through achievement, provision, articulation, or containment. He is seen not as coherence, but as function. His relevance becomes conditional, not because intrinsic validity is lacking, but because the field cannot register that validity without performance. So he performs. Not as an expression of essence, but as a compensation for non-resolvability. His movement is oriented toward visibility within a system that does not resolve presence directly. What is read as ambition often conceals an attempt to be seen. What is labeled drive may, at its root, be translation. Coherence is attempting to appear in a field that cannot perceive it without mediation.
The theological frame mirrors the same condition. The god who punishes sin but remains silent in righteousness reflects not merely distortion, but limitation. Transgression registers. Alignment does not. The individual encounters a presence that appears attentive to error and indifferent to coherence. Worth becomes contingent on avoiding violation. Existence itself feels conditional. It is easy to interpret this as judgment or wrath. But the deeper structure is perceptual. The interpretive frame cannot resolve affirmation without mediation. It can register deviation, but not coherence. The temple closes, not because the divine withdraws, but because the field cannot perceive what does not perturb it.
Even philosophy, in its effort to purify morality, reproduces the same constraint. Immanuel Kant removes reward and punishment in order to eliminate distortion and recover duty grounded in autonomous will. But this move assumes a subject already capable of perceiving coherence internally. It strips away manipulation without generating signal. It leaves intact the premise that alignment can be known without first becoming perceptible. It cannot. Not because coherence is absent, but because the capacity to resolve it has not yet formed.
Across these domains, the structure remains consistent. Coherence does not vary. The field does. Within this variability arises what is commonly called anxiety. It is not best understood as disorder, but as resistance. It is the cost incurred when movement toward connection occurs in the presence of unresolved terror of irrelevance within a field that cannot reliably resolve coherence. Movement is not blocked by lack of substance, but by the need to convert that substance into a form the field can register. Anxiety is the felt resistance of that conversion. Effort replaces directness. Strategy replaces expression. The body tightens, not because movement is wrong, but because movement requires translation. Coherence must be made visible in order to be trusted. The cost accumulates. Energy is spent not in being, but in making being legible. Identity organizes around managing that resistance. Relationship becomes negotiation. Expression becomes performance.
None of this alters what underlies it. Coherence persists.
What changes, sometimes suddenly, is the field. There are moments in which the system acquires sufficient dimensionality to resolve coherence directly. This does not occur through mediation or performance. It does not arise from avoiding error. It appears as immediate perceptibility. For me, it took radical somatic intervention. Movement no longer requires conversion. Expression no longer incurs resistance. The system no longer needs to justify its presence in order to be real. These moments are often described as healing or repair. But nothing has been repaired. Nothing has been restored. The field has expanded its capacity to resolve what was always present.
If coherence required repair, it wouldn’t be coherence. If it required validation, it would have been uncertain. But if it was only non-resolvable, then the entire history reorganizes. The child who was never seen being good was not deficient. The man who performed for relevance was not incomplete. The person who felt unworthy was not condemned. Each encountered a field that could not resolve what they were.
When coherence becomes directly perceptible, something emerges that is often mistaken for loss. It is not loss. It is grief. Not grief of absence, but grief of recognition. It is the realization that what is now visible was always true and could not be seen. The system does not mourn what was missing. It mourns the conditions under which what was present could not appear. This is not a longing for a different past. It is an encounter with the limits of the field in which that past unfolded.
And even this is not the end of the movement. For the moment coherence becomes perceptible, it reveals something further. Its reality does not depend on that perception. Visibility changes. Coherence does not. The field may expand or contract. It may resolve or obscure. But what it encounters remains unchanged.
From this, a different form of action becomes possible. Action is no longer organized around earning relevance or avoiding punishment. It no longer arises from the need to translate being into a form that can be recognized. It no longer negotiates with the field. The prior necessity to convert coherence into something registrable falls away. Not because the field has stabilized permanently, but because its variability no longer determines what is real. Movement ceases to anticipate misperception. It is no longer shaped by the memory of invisibility or the intermittent relief of recognition. The structure that required alignment to be seen in order to be trusted loses its authority.
What remains does not seek confirmation. It does not orient toward correction. It does not require expression to validate its presence. The final dependency collapses. It is not the dependency on reward, or punishment, or even recognition that dissolves. It is the dependency on visibility itself. Coherence is no longer something that must appear in order to be real. The distinction between seen and unseen loses its structural significance. What once felt like absence when not perceived is revealed as a limitation of the field, not a statement about what is.
The past does not resolve. It does not reconcile. It does not become illuminated in any final sense. It simply ceases to require a different configuration to be true. The child who was never seen being good is not finally seen. The man who performed for relevance is not finally recognized. The silence of the god is not replaced by affirmation. Nothing in the record is altered. And yet, none of it retains the power it once held to define.
Because that power was never in the events themselves, but in the assumption that what could not be perceived could not be real. When that assumption dissolves, the entire structure reorganizes without changing a single fact. No repaired narrative remains. No healed identity is required. No restored coherence is achieved. Only this remains: That which never depended on being seen is no longer mistaken for being absent when it is not. And in that, even the need to say that coherence persists falls away.
This story does not have a “happy ending” in the classic sense. Coming to this realization — in my case on my 59th birthday — brings you face-to-face with the scale of damage I’ve done to myself and others in the flailing of the terror of being condemned. Tragically, this terror is prophetic as it manifests the very outcome it pretends to fear. And while relational repair and reconciliation is neither certain nor an expectation, accountability brings a quiet sobriety to each day. For me, the only path I’ve found to begin to repair my interior space is music. Enjoy the link below and play it loudly.
